Aging in Place with Grace and Style

We at Adroit Design Remodeling have many years of experience working with aging in place renovations. We are also keenly aware that most homeowners who have reached the point of discussing aging in place design want the changes in their home to be as subtle as possible. We always do our very best to select products that will blend nicely with our client’s existing home and style.

The new office desk in our client’s home was designed with a wider knee opening to accommodate a wheelchair if necessary.

We’ve included a recent example of an aging in place renovation that Adroit Design Remodeling completed in McLean, Virginia. Our client, who owns a lovely 1950’s split-level home, needed to add a bathroom to the main level due to health concerns. She also wanted to enlarge and update her master bedroom and bathroom with aging in place features. Additionally, our client wanted to convert a rarely used dining room into her new office on the main level.

Our client’s aging in place shower is spacious and spa-like.

Our client made it abundantly clear from the outset that she didn’t want her home to look like an elderly care institution and we assured her that we would design and build very attractive new spaces for her. We communicated to her that more and more top manufacturers such as Kohler and Moen are producing beautiful aging in place products such as grab bars and shower seats.

Our designer, who is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), assisted our client with selecting gorgeous products for her new spa-like bathroom, as well as the other areas of her home that were included in the remodeling project.

From the attractive slip-resistant shale tiles on the bathroom floor to the sleek grab bar with an integrated towel bar, our designer incorporated aging in place products seamlessly into our client’s home. The shower was created with a zero-threshold entry and an opening wide enough to accommodate a wheel chair in the future if needed. The bathroom vanity, new office desk, bedroom and bathroom doors were all constructed with wider openings for future access. A tilting mirror was selected for the bathroom vanity in the event that our client needed to see it from a lower wheelchair level.

All newly designed areas included plenty of bright layers of lighting to ensure that our client would have the ability to see all spaces as clearly as possible. As an example, the master bathroom was designed with LED vanity lights, recessed lights and a lighted magnifying make-up mirror.
